Woodland Heights Holds Rededication Ceremony for Margie Michael Learning Garden

A rededication ceremony for the Margie Michael Learning Garden was held on Thursday, August 24, at Woodland Heights Elementary. Woodland staff were joined by several parents, students, and community members for the event, which included a brief introduction of the newly renovated garden directly across from the front entrance to the school.

"Margie was a beloved teacher here at Woodland Heights," stated Woodland Heights Elementary Principal Jeanette Lancaster. "She was the head of the Sunshine committee and worked hard to make sure that everyone was included, and that grade levels stayed connected. Margie impacted many students in her 37 years of teaching, and she left quite a legacy behind in Brownwood ISD."

Margie passed away suddenly in 2009, and the Margie Michael Learning Garden was originally built and dedicated in Margie's honor on May 12, 2011. "The garden was the result of a grant that was secured by former Woodland coworkers, Christy Wilson and Bob Turner, who was the principal at Woodland Heights at the time that Margie passed," said Lancaster. "The garden was intended to be shared with future students at Woodland Heights and enjoyed for many years to come."

Discussions about renovations to the garden began with the PTO as plants had become overgrown and the sprinkler system was wearing out. "Together, we made a plan for revitalizing this beautiful garden in a way that would bring honor to its namesake," said Lancaster. "We believed our plan would take a few years to bring to fruition, but with the help of some very generous people, we were able to realize our vision in just a few short months."

Following Lancaster's remarks, she invited everyone to walk through the garden to view the renovations before enjoying grilled hotdogs on the playground. A large inflatable slide was also set up in the school gym for children to enjoy.

"Margie was nothing short of an anchor within the Woodland school community," said Lancaster. "We want to thank our sponsors for their donation of time, money, and supplies and for helping to bring beauty back to our learning garden."
