The top two girls and boys teams competed on Wednesday, October 11, in the 2023 Coggin 6th Grade Basketball Championships.

The Lady Lions and the Swishettes played for the girl’s sixth-grade basketball championship, and excited the audience with a very close and exciting game. The Lady Lions defeated the Swishettes with a score of 15 to 14. Lexi Driskill scored all 15 points for the Lady Lions. Lynlee Richmon scored 11 points and Novah Matheny scored 3. Driskill was also the highest scorer for the season with a total of 182 points and Richmon came in second for high points with a total of 85 points.

“This was an awesome basketball season for us,” stated Coach Haylee Ratliff. “It’s our first year to have the pre-athletic program at Coggin and it made a big difference in how the girls were able to progress. Overall, I was very happy with how each team competed throughout the season. I’m proud of all the girls.

Coach Hohertz and Coach Garcia were a huge help. They refereed all of the games for us; Hohertz always visits during our class periods to help teach and encourage. They also bring varsity players in to coach the teams. That adds something special to the experience for the 6th graders. I want to give a big thank you to them for everything they do for our basketball season.”

BHS Basketball Coach Heather Hohertz echoed praise for the sixth-grade girl players. “The girls worked hard over the past six weeks,” stated Hohertz. “Each game the girls improved their skill.  It was awesome to see some of the girls who have never played enjoy the game. I want to thank Coach Ratliff for continuing this tradition.  I want to also thank Coach Garcia for helping me ref and teach the game. Lastly, I am grateful for my girls to be able to give back and teach the game they love.”
