It is a Time to be Thankful

I saw the first glimpse of spring about two weeks ago in a clump of green grass in my back yard. That clump had approximately 12 individual stalks of grass that whispered of the hope to come in the spring. I know we have not had a terrible winter, but I am tired of the dryness, the colorless leftovers in the yards and fields. I know people sometimes experience that feeling in their own lives, not just about a season.

This entire year in Classroom Guidance has focused on “Being the Best You Can Be”. We have talked about our character and how our character is how we ACT.  It is what you say and what you do. It is about choices – positive and negative, and we make these choices. We have a choice on how we will be and have also focused on being thankful. When you read what kids are thankful for, you realize they are already making  positive choices and you see the future and hope, if you look through their eyes.

The following is a short list of things our students have listed as being thankful for:  my mom, my dad, my whole family, the rain forest, God, Jesus, horses, freedom, my talent, my books, my stuffed animals, squishy pillows, the army, toys, pools, ice cream, holidays, cartoons, pants, baseball, wigs, the United States of America, rainbows, teachers, for love, food, babies, XBoxes, and Tuesdays.

The list alone is a collection of some serious, some silly, yet very appropriate items/experiences that we all can be thankful for.  If you ever get stumped on what to be thankful for, ask a child…. they usually have some pretty good insights.
